The family shown in this post had a recent session. Tracy’s daughters made all the arrangements as a way to say “We Love You” to their mother who is going though a tough time. I made some suggestions for some beautiful outdoor settings and we decided on a place and the time to meet. The weather cooperated and the plan went off like clockwork. Outdoor pictures don’t always happen the way we would like then to, especially here in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. We always keep an eye on the weather and we ask our families to be a bit flexible with the schedule so we can dodge a thunderstorm or start a little early to work in heavy cloud cover.
It’s always a good idea to bring some mosquito repellent to your outdoor family pictures. Those pesky insects can make a session a challenge. Some people don’t like he DEET in traditional repellent and I’ve found that Bounce Dryer Sheets work well. I stick some in my hat and in my shirt collar. I also put some in my pockets and leave them dangling out so the scent fills the air around me.
That may work well for the photographer but it doesn’t really provide a good look for those in the photographs. LOL. But a quick google search for alternative mosquito repellents can provide a lot of good information, giving you options and helping you be prepared for your family portrait session.
We’ll also talk about clothing options prior to your session so you can know what kinds of things to avoid and what to consider when making clothing choices. You can see some examples on this family picture site.

These light paintings were created for the Award Winning Cheese makers at Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese in Waterloo Wisconsin. Made from milk produce by their own heard of dairy cows, the Crave Brothers swept the nation wide cheese competion, taking first, second and third place with their fresh mozzarella cheeses.

This is what photographers say when the images are taken from the camera card without manipulation in Photoshop or Lightroom. SOOC, Straight Out Of Camera.
These images are from a quick session with a high school senior I photographed last night. We had a beautiful day and we took advantage of that.
I can’t wait to see what they look like after they have been retouched. Tell me what you think.

I just finished another commercial project for Componex, a manufacturer out of Edgerton Wisconsin. They make Idler Shafts for all kinds of industry. Featured in the image are three versions of an Idler Shaft, one with a Winertia Through Shaft that lives inside the Idler Shaft and goes the full length of the Idler Shaft. The problem with a Through Shaft is that they are heavy and cost a lot. There’s a lot of material there. The weight actually causes the Idler Shaft to flex and that’s not good for whatever material you are trying to keep straight though a series of shafts. Imagine paper or cellophane being rolled out in thin rolls, 12 feet wide by hundreds of feet long. A flex in the Shafts can cause all kinds of problems.
Componex came up with two new ideas. The Winertia Hub Stub and the Winertia Nub stub. As you can see they support the bearings on each end of the Idler Shaft and eliminate the heavy weight of the Through Shaft. Simple but effective.
My job was to make a comparison between all three. This will go up on their web site and also be used for display at trade shows and for printed advertising.
You can see in the “Before Photo” how the parts were brought to me for this project. The final image was a compilation of over 100 photographs. It was a very complex project but I think we nailed it. What do you think?

This is another example of a light painting. This aircraft was photographed at the Rockford Airport in Rockford Illinois. The final image was made by combining 48 different exposure taken over a period of time of about 3 hours. I;ll let you guess which one is the “before” photo and which is the “after”.
I enjoy photographing aircraft, automobiles, (classic or otherwise) collectables of any kind, and buildings.

In today’s world, it’s easy to become jaded by photography. Everyone is busy posting photographs of everything from picture of themselves with animal noses to what they are having for breakfast. We’ve become jaded by photography and especially accepting of poor photography. The recent trend in business has been, take a photo with your smart phone and post it online for the world to see. And no doubt, our smart devices and do a pretty darn good job of capturing and manipulating our snapshots to look…well, like everyone else’s snap shots.
That won’t do in a world where we want our product to stand out from the rest. If you are a marketing director of a manufacturing company, or if you design web sites for companies of any kind of industry, the image you put before the public and your potential customers is very important.
Just for fun, I put together a few before and after shots of some Buck Knife products. Now, don’t get me wrong, I didn’t do these with an iPhone and I didn’t try to make the before images look especially bad. But I hope you’ll appreciate the difference from the before to the professionally lighted image next below it.’
Let me know what you think. And call me for an opportunity to make your products stand out in the crowd.
Sports banners have been a popular item in recent years. Many a photographer has tried his or her hand at producing these fun renditions of team unity. We’ve made more than a few. This one for a softball team in the Stateline area. The Sidekicks are a USA Fastpitch Softball organization run by local parents. They put a lot of effort into helping their girls have a good experience participating in youth sports. Cheers to those parents and coaches of youth sports. My hat is off to you.
This is part of a project the owner of a private gun collection. There are a lot more to do, but these are the first images. This style of photography is available to showcase your products. If you are a manufacturer, collector, buyer, seller, if you design websites or produce trade shows, we can help you get the photos that will pop and draw the attention of the crowd you want to reach.
